Here are three properties of ionic solids that are correlated with lattice energy: melting point, boiling point, and hardness. You may have identified others.<\/p>\n\n

Melting point<\/strong>. When a solid melts the constituent particles (atoms, ions, or molecules) no longer are in a crystal lattice but rather move randomly among each other. Thus for a solid to melt the kinetic energy of the particles must be large enough that the particles can move slightly farther apart and move out of the regular arrangement of the crystal lattice. Increasing kinetic energy correlates with increasing temperature. The greater the lattice energy is the higher the temperature needs to be to provide sufficient energy. This means the melting point is higher when lattice energy is larger.<\/p>\n\n

Boiling point<\/strong>. When a liquid boils the constituent particles must move much farther apart to go from the liquid to the gaseous state. For a liquid to boil the kinetic energy of the particles must be sufficent to overcome the net attractive forces among the particles. These attractive forces arise from Coulomb's law, just as the lattice energy does. Increasing kinetic energy correlates with increasing temperature. The greater the lattice energy is the greater the net attractive forces among the particles and the higher the temperature needs to be to provide sufficient energy. This means the boiling point is higher when lattice energy is larger.<\/p>\n\n

Hardness<\/strong>. The hardness of a solid is related to how difficult it is to move one part of the solid relative to another part. To scrape away part of the surface of a solid, for example, means moving away part of the crystal lattice. The greater the lattice energy is the greater the overall attraction among the ions and the greater the difficulty of moving one part of the crystal lattice relative to another part.
