Instructor Overview

Example: Encouraging Organ Donation

Researchers asked volunteer subjects to imagine they moved to a new state, applied for a driver’s license, and needed to decide whether or not to become an organ donor. Researchers created three different versions of the survey, each with a different donor strategy. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the three types of recruiting strategies.

  • Opt Out: The default option was to be an organ donor, and individuals had to opt out of organ donation.
  • Opt In: The default option was to not be an organ donor, and individuals had to opt in to organ donation.
  • Neutral: There was no default option, and individuals have to choose whether or not they will be an organ donor.
