A reflexive verb is a verb used with a reflexive pronoun to link the action of the verb to the subject of the verb. Reflexive pronouns show that the action of the verb is done to the subject. The action of the verb is “reflected” back to the subject. The subject does and receives the action.

Reflexive verbs appear with a “se” attached to the infinitive (unconjugated form).  Despertarse and levantarse are two examples. To conjugate reflexive verbs, a reflexive pronoun is used that matches the verb ending.

You can also use a subject pronoun for clarification or expressions like a sí mismoa sí misma and the plural a sí mismos and a sí mismas.

Me despierto muy temprano. Me despierto a las seis de la mañana.

Me gusta quedarme un rato en la cama. Me levanto a las seis y cuarto de la mañana.
